Dr. Ildikó Nagy-István is a jewellery designer and enamel artist whose creative journey has been shaped by a lifelong love of making things by hand. From an early age, she has enjoyed working with forms, colours, and materials, whether through painting, embroidery, or metalwork. She first encountered the enamel (tűzzománc) technique in 2010, when a hobby quickly turned into a lasting passion. Since then, she has been fascinated by the transformation that takes place in the kiln, where carefully prepared enamelled copper surfaces emerge as unique and expressive pieces.
Thematic relevance
Ildikó’s work contributes to the valorisation of heritage crafts by combining traditional enamel techniques with a contemporary artistic approach. While deeply rooted in centuries-old craftsmanship, her practice remains dynamic and experimental, showing how enamel art can stay relevant in modern design. Continuous learning plays an important role in her work: she regularly expands her knowledge through training with Hungarian and international jewellers and enamel artists. Through exhibitions and community-based craft platforms, her creations help keep traditional techniques visible, accessible, and meaningful for today’s audiences.
