Introduction

Zoltán Kovács is a master basket weaver who learned the foundations of his craft from a traditional basket maker in Jászberény, where he quickly mastered the techniques of peasant basketry. Over many years, he studied basket weaving in depth to fully understand the complex structure behind this demanding yet beautiful craft. He later became a vocational instructor and was awarded the title of Folk Applied Artist (Népi Iparművész). Teaching has always played a central role in his professional life.

Thematic relevance

Zoltán’s work closely reflects the core values of the COMMHERITOUR project by contributing to the valorisation of heritage crafts as living cultural practices. Through education and mentorship, he actively preserves and passes on traditional knowledge, particularly the basket-weaving heritage of the Békés region, including its characteristic techniques and forms. His openness to innovation — experimenting with new shapes and materials — demonstrates how traditional crafts can respond to contemporary needs while maintaining authenticity. His activities support sustainable cultural tourism, skills transfer, and the strengthening of regional identity.
